How to choose the type of ceremony for your wedding

One of the most important parts of a wedding is deciding what type of ceremony you will have.

There are some options, and each of them offers different pros and cons to keep in mind:

CIVIL CEREMONY

PROS

  • Even when you are doing a destination wedding, the marriage will be legal by the Apostille or legalization of your marriage certificate
  • Same-sex or LGBT couples can choose this option as well

CONS
  • Blood tests are part of the legal requirements
  • The couple and 4 witnesses need to arrive in Mexico within 3-4 days in advance
  • Cannot be personalized

COMMENTS
For couples who need to legalize their marriages, a civil ceremony is the option.
Having a destination wedding with a civil ceremony requires following some legal requirements, and one of them is having a blood test.
I assist with many legal paperwork and many grooms and brides have panic needles and suffer, even though the blood tests are performed by experienced and professional staff and are very quick. In this case, I highly recommend reviewing the decision to have a legal ceremony.

SYMBOLIC CEREMONY

PROS
  • No requirements
  • Can be personalized
  • Same-sex or LGBT couples can choose this option as well.

CONS
  • This ceremony is not legal

COMMENTS
For couples who want to have a special ceremony, this is the option. As a minister, I also perform hundreds of symbolic ceremonies, and in my opinion is one of the best ceremonies you can choose. As you can personalize it, it is possible to include different and important elements for the couple that other types of ceremonies don't allow.

MAYAN CEREMONY

PROS
  • No requirements

CONS
  • This ceremony is not legal
  • Cannot be personalized

COMMENTS
For those couples who are connected with their spirituality and want to experience an inner and deep sense of the union, this is the type of ceremony you may choose.
This ceremony will allow you to feel the spiritual meaning of your union in contact with your souls and nature through the Mayan ritual.

RELIGIOUS CEREMONY

PROS
  • Performance of the wedding ceremony based on your religious beliefs

CONS
  • This ceremony is not legal
  • Cannot be personalized
  • The couple must meet the requirements of each ceremony as stipulated

COMMENTS
For those couples who want to follow their tradition as Hindu, Jewish, Catholic, Christian, etc.
Of course, tradition and religion are very important matters in a couple's life.

Many couples are not focused on religion, but for a great number of them, this is an essential and crucial decision before they start a new life together as a husband and wife.
